Help In Choosing a Home School Program

One of the number one things to look for in a home school program is make sure you know how personal their services are. When you speak with them, do you get the sense that your child will be cared for personally, or do you feel like he/she will just be one of hundreds of students. Also, check out the online reviews for that program. Do you find that they offer one on one tutoring help. A lot of programs say they have dependable teachers, but you can never contact them. This is often true of online programs.

Many school programs only offer online programs. It has been our experience through the years that nothing works better than book, paper, and pens. Online programs often overextend and can’t offer the services they promise. Also, you have to deal with programs you can’t log into, malfunctioning programs, programs that won’t let your child advance on to the next level unless they have no mistakes on the previous level. Making this worse, often with online programs there is no one to help you with questions that you can’t get on that level.

Something else to consider: How many times do you wish that your children were not as active on their computers as they are? How many times do you wish that they weren’t as involved in “internet land” as they are? Then why would you want to present their education to them on the same venue that their entertainment, and obsessions are found? Just food for thought. Also something else to consider, what about down time for messed up internet connections, or messed up computers, or trips taken where there isn’t internet access?

When you find a possible home school program, be sure to check out the curriculum carefully. A program is only as good as the curriculum used. At New Life we have used the Alpha Omega Curriculum for over 30 years. It has consistently proven to meet the needs of the students. Some of our students have gone on to become doctors and lawyers and have gone into other professional careers. Our curriculum has gotten them ready to go on to college, or to advance into whatever career path they choose. What curriculum do they use? Some programs actually use the same curriculum used in the public schools. The things that are being taught that you are trying to avoid will still be in the curriculum. Also, some curriculum may not be as advanced as what is needed to prepare them for the future. Also, it may not cover all the areas that need to be covered. Some curriculum companies provide the schools with a synopsis of the books, a list of what is covered in each course. Ask for that. It it isn’t available then do some research. Find reviews about the curriculum.

Pray and seek God’s guidance. If you feel God leading you to enroll your children in a Christian school, or a home school, seek His guidance as to what would be the best one for your child. Follow His peace. Let Him lead you. He will provide a way. Nothing is as important as your children's souls and their futures.
